Training Programs
The residency training program of the department caters in training the residents in the different subspecialties, namely, Otology and Audiology, Rhinopharyngology and Allergology, Laryngology/ Bronchoesophagology, Head and Neck Oncology/Surgery, and Maxillofacial Trauma Surgery, Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Since 2003, the Philippine Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (PBO-HNS) granted a 4-year accreditation of the residency training program. Since then, the department has been granted full accreditation every 4 years. To cope with the increasing number of patients, the department requested to increase the number of residents from 1 to 2 residents per year for a total of 8 residents for 16 ward beds (2 beds or patients per resident).
Activities/Projects
The department hosted an In-House Temporal Bone Dissection Course, a PBO-HNS required course, with 2-day lecture days via zoom and a 2-days dissection course last March 19 and 26 and April 2 and 9 which was participated by Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center and Ospital ng Makati.
In partnership with the Philippine Academy of Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery, the department hosted its 1st Scientific meeting entitled “All About Facial Plastic Surgery” via Zoom on March 24, 2022.
On June 11, 2022, in collaboration with Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center, the department hosted an In-house Bronchoesophagology course and workshop, a PBO-HNS required course, for the graduating senior residents.
On July 1-2, 2022, the department hosted The Basic Facial Plastic Surgery Course and Workshop, a PBO-HNS required course via zoom which was granted with 6.5 CPD units.
On November 26, 2022, the department facilitated a Blepharoplasty Mission and catered to 5 patients.
Dr. Maria Cristina Viceral, together with the department, hosted and celebrated the “World Voice Day” last April 17, 2023 at ENT OPD with laryngology clinic and laryngology lay forum.
Last May 13, 2023, Dr. Joseph Bernard Lo headed the department virtual post graduate course “Imaging in ENT” with 103 participants attended by different ORL-HNS accredited institutions.
Consultants and residents of the Department of ORLHNS had attended the PSO-HNS Midyear Convention held on May 18-20, 2023 at Widus Hotel, Clark, Pampanga.
Last July 12, 2023, the department had their re-visit by the Philippine Board of Otorlaryngology Head and Neck Surgery for accreditation.
Last August 4, 2023, the Department of ORL-HNS, QCGH was chosen by the Philippine Board of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery to be a testing center of the Oral Examination to be held on October 22, 2023.
Achievements/Awards/Commendations/Citations
During the PSO-HNS 2022 Virtual Interesting Case Contest, via zoom last May 28, 2022, Dr. Jericho Agnes presented the paper entitled “Glomus Tympanicum Tumor with a semblance of Granulation Tissue associated with Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media” which won 2nd place.
Our graduates, Dr. Joseph Bernard Lo and Dr. Joyce Rodvie Sagun were inducted as fellows of the PSO-HNS. Our residents Dr. Jeff James P. Alega and Dr. Anjenneth M. Bernarte graduated and passed the diplomate boards taken last October 2022.
Last April 3, 2023, Dr. Ma. Niña Kristine Sison and Dr. Lena Alethea Cruz took and passed their Virtual Practical Exam at QCGH.
Last April 21, 2023, Dr. Ma. Nina Kristine Sison presented her research paper entitled “Otolaryngologic manifestation of long COVID-19 infection among patients in Quezon City General Hospital” during the 2nd Asian Conference on Multidisciplinary Research and was awarded with Best in Oral Presentation.
Last May 19, 2023, Dr. Norjem Villanueva presented his paper entitled “Collet Sicard Syndrome due to a Skull Base Tumor with Nasopharyngeal Extension” at the Midyear Convention at Widus Hotel, Clark, Pampanga.
Dr. Ma. Niña Kristine C. Sison and Dr. Lena Alethea Cruz presented their paper at Philippine Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Descriptive Research Contest 2023 held last August 3, 2023, at The Patriot Bldg Km. 18 West Service Road, SLEX, Parañaque City and Dr. Ma. Niña Kristine C. Sison won third place.
Last August 20, 2023, Dr. Ma. Niña Kristine Sison, Dr. Jericho Agnes, Dr. Norjem Villanueva, Dr. La Reyna Salenga, participated and competed in the Quiz Bee hosted by the Philippine Academy of Laryngobronchoesophagology and Phoniatrics held at Unilab Bayanihan Center, Pasig City and won third place.
Last August 30, 2023, Dr. L Reyna Salenga presented her paper entitled “Rhinorrhea due to CSF leak from a neglected skull base fracture: A case report” in the interdepartmental interesting case contest at SB hall, QCGH and won third place.
Dr. Katrina Nicole Fortuno, Dr. Emmanuel Tadeus Cruz and Dr. Mark Arjan Fernandez’s paper entitled “Hoarseness due to misdiagnosed and neglected laryngeal chicken bone impaction” was published in the Journal of Laryngology and Voice Volume 13.

2. Hearing Center The hearing center is located on the 4th floor left wing of the hospital building, adjacent to the ORLHNS Ward nurse’s station. It is equipped with a Pure Tone Audiometry, Automatic Auditory Brainstem Response and tuning fork directed to identify hearing loss.
