STAFFING FUNCTIONS
 
HEAD OF THE LABORATORY
The Head of the Laboratory is responsible for the overall operation and administration of the Laboratory, including the employment of competent personnel, equipment, safety, laboratory policies, quality assurance, all testing including proficiency testing and test reports.
 
TRAINING OFFICER (Medical Specialist)           
The Training Officer in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology is responsible to facilitate the conduct of the training sessions, manage feedback sessions to ensure continuous improvements   of   training.
 
CONSULTANT PATHOLOGIST

• ANATOMIC PATHOLOGIST

Responsible in examining tissues removed by needle aspiration, surgical procedures or autopsy. They are responsible for diagnosing diseased tissue and investigating the mechanisms and development of disease.
Evaluates tissue specimens, which include cervical scrapings (i.e., PAP smears), biopsies, surgical resections, and whole-body evaluations at autopsy.

• CLINICAL PATHOLOGIST

1. Supervises, assess testing and analysis of samples as referred by the Pathology Resident and Medical Technologists to determine health and pathology of patients.
2. Document findings and conclusions, and make recommendations.

                             

PATHOLOGY RESIDENT PHYSICIAN

• Rotates in autopsy program of laboratory sections.
• Hospital responsibility in finalizing protocol except in most difficult cases.
• Rotates in surgical pathology sections, grossing and dissection of pathology referrals and reads histopathology slides with the consultant.
• Assist staff pathologist at the interdepartmental CPC and tumor board conferences.
• Present an investigative work at the end of the residency training.
• Assists in the teaching program of post graduate interns.
• Schedule and present cases to be taken up during gross and microscopic conferences.      

 
CHIEF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST
The Chief Medical Technologist plans, organises, directs and coordinates a range of activities in the laboratory. Performs administrative duties, supervises and assists Laboratory personnel, and oversees everyday laboratory operations. Manages and coordinate the financial, human and material resources of the laboratory.
 
MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST (SECTION-IN-CHARGE)

• Responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Section.
• Runs calibration and quality control both internal and external to ensure that the machine is working and in good condition before conduct of test procedures to generate accurate test results for patients and help the clinicians for the correct diagnosis of the disease.
• Trains and mentors junior staff on the right use of equipment, validation and recording and laboratory safety.
• Manages and resolves administrative and technical problems

 
 

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST
Analyses various biological samples to treat or diagnose different diseases. Their main duties include getting blood samples from patients, run calibration and quality control before conduct of test procedures to create quality and accurate laboratory results.

 
LABORATORY AIDE/ MORGUE ATTENDANT
Ensures that the laboratory is clean and orderly. Responsible for the decontamination of used plates and materials in all sections of the laboratory. Sanitizes areas and instruments and ensures proper disposal of hazardous waste. May run errands and produce progress reports.

TRAINING PROGRAM
            It has an accredited residency training program in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, as well as a dynamic internship program in Medical Technology.

ACTIVITIES/PROJECTS
The Department of Pathology participates in various outreach mass blood donation activity sponsored by various barangays in Quezon City.

ACHIEVEMENTS/ AWARDS/ COMMENDATIONS

• The Department of Pathology is consistent in achieving an EXCELLENT grade and PASSED proficiency test event in the different National External Quality Assessment Scheme (NEQAS) given by the various DOH National Reference Laboratories in the Philippines such as, Lung Center of the Philippines for Clinical Chemistry, The National Kidney & Transplant Institute for Hematology, The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine for Transfusion Transmissible Infection (TTI) Blood Service Facility and Proficiency Test in Mycobacteriology, and the Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Program (ARSP) Proficiency Test conducted by  Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Reference Laboratory (ARSRL-RITM), and San Lazaro Hospital SACCL for serology.

 
CLINICAL PATHOLOGY

• HEMATOLOGY

Section wherein routine and special tests on the components of whole blood such as the red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are performed. The section also performs cell counts, differential counts, and other microscopic examination of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and other body fluids.

• CLINICAL CHEMISTRY

Clinical Chemistry section is where patients' blood and other body fluids are checked for various chemical components using state-of-the-art equipment.

• CLINICAL MICROSCOPY

The Clinical Microscopy is where performance of scientific analysis of non-blood body fluids such as urine, semen and stool take place.

• BACTERIOLOGY

A bacteriology laboratory is devoted in the culturing, examination, and identification of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, yeasts, etc.

• BLOOD BANK & SEROLOGY

This section is where donated human blood is collected, processed, tested and stored before it is used for transfusions. Blood bags must be free from any transfusion transmissible infections (TTI) and are of quality and safe before they are used for transfusion.

DRUG TESTING LABORATORY
The Drug Testing Laboratory is where urine samples are tested for the presence of prohibited drugs.

ANATOMIC PATHOLOGY
Section where processing of tissue and body fluids are done in order for the Pathologists yield diagnostic information. Under this section autopsies and Rush Frozen Section specimens are processed as well.
